International Max Planck Research School for Comparative Legal History

 

Promoting young researchers

The „International Max Planck Research School for Comparative Legal History (IMPRS)“ is an international PhD program of the Max Planck Institute of European Legal History as well as the Goethe University Frankfurt am Main.

The research seminar promotes German and foreign researchers who aspire to obtain their doctorate in the field of legal history.

The IMPRS dedicates itself especially to research studies with a comparative character and also includes studies on non-European legal cultures. “Legal history” is seen in a broad sense from antiquity to contemporary legal history. The comparative approach can thereby be laid out chronologically in a horizontal or vertical way.

The research objectives can be taken, e.g. from the area of social, scientific, institutional or dogmatic history. Likewise, norm or context oriented projects can be studied. The research seminar is supervised by renowned legal historians. Furthermore, numerous foreign legal historians support the work of the IMPRS and refer suitable candidates to the school.

 

Scholarships: Prerequisites and procedure

Basically, the IMPRS is interested in receiving as many applications as possible in order to be able to promote a wide spectrum of different research projects.

 

Scholarship amount and duration

• The approval of the scholarship is for one year with the possibility of extending it for another year.
• The scholarship is sponsored with about 1,000 € per month.

 

Application prerequisites

• A university degree
• Already existing mentoring of the research project (usually dissertation) by a German or foreign university professor
• Sufficient knowledge and communication skills of the German language
• Willingness to live in Frankfurt and be an active member of the research group for the duration of the scholarship.

• Project draft of approx. 10 pages. The main objective and outline of the project or doctoral thesis should be the focus of this draft.
• Timeline: Outline of the working measures scheduled for the stay in Frankfurt.

The IMPRS grants scholarships beginning April 1^st or October 1^st. All applications should be sent by regular mail to the below given address. Application deadline for the winter semester is June 15^th, for the winter semester December 15^th.
