Academic Program

The relationship between law and ethics on the one hand, and science and technology on the other, will be the main topic of the 25th IVR World Congress. The rapid development of science and technology in the last decades leads to new challenges not only in individual fields of doctrinal law (civil law, public law, criminal law) but also in their related areas of jurisprudence. This holds especially for the part of jurisprudence concerned with the structure of justice, the efficacy of law as a social steering instrument, and the empirical conditions of legal responsibility. The emphasis of the meeting thus will be be on the ability of jurisprudential principles to adapt appropriately to such new technical developments, rather than on the concrete questions of doctrinal law.

For this purpose, the term “science” is not to be treated reductively as natural science. Humanities and the social sciences are to be included as well. Thus, attention will be paid to the specific relationship of legal doctrine with the various social sciences, especially economics. The scientific character of law itself needs also to be taken into consideration.

The centennial of the IVR, whose founding was significantly connected with the city of Frankfurt, is an appropriate occasion to pay particular attention to the more recent history of jurisprudence..

The Congress will also  in certain workshops and working groups, provide opportunity to treat  questions relating to the entire jurisprudential spectrum, beyond the Congress's main focus.

The official languages are English and German.
