Programme Structure

weitereinfos2

The Bachelor's programme provides a solid foundation in the biosciences. The curriculum comprises 20 modules in which the theoretical and practical training in the classical and modern areas of the biosciences as well as the necessary basic knowledge in chemistry, physics and mathematics are imparted. Within the programme there is the possibility of an individual focus in four specialization modules, selected from an offer of at least 12 internships, as well as in a freely selectable module "Free study". The three-month Bachelor's thesis with the preparatory module "Introduction to Scientific Work" concludes the programme.

The table below reproduces the exemplary Study Plan in the Bachelor's Study Programme in the Biological Sciences. Courses with similar content are consolidated to a larger unit in the modules. The Semester Week Hours (SWS) stipulates the mandatory attendance times in the courses; the Credit Points (CP) measure the total amount of work for a course, including preparation and follow-up work. For the successful completion of the Bachelor's Degree Programme, 180 CP must be earned. Thus, an average of 30 Credit Points are to be achieved per semester, which corresponds to a total work effort of approximately 900 work hours.

In the modules, certain proof of study must be provided and/or module examinations must be taken, usually in the form of written examinations. The proofs of study are mainly covered by two types of documents that require students to actively participate:

  • Preparation of reports. Preparation of reports. In this way the students are introduced to the technique of scientific publishing, since the protocols have the classification of a publication.
  • Seminars in which the students give presentations.

At the end of the module examinations, the overall Bachelor grade is given. Certain modules have cumulative module examinations in the form of individually graded courses. The regulations for each module can be found in the module descriptions of the Bachelor regulations.

The following example study plan corresponds to the current study regulations of 2023 (for first-year students from winter semester 2023/24); students who began their studies before winter semester 2023/24 can find the example study plan in the appendix to their study regulations.
